This lecture examines the cases of occurrence and damage patterns of various natural disasters occurring in the world, and helps a broader understanding of the earth's physical environment and natural phenomena related to natural disasters. Students will understand the causes and damage patterns of natural disasters that threaten human life and future, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, landslides, typhoons, and asteroid impacts, and efforts to prevent disasters. The course provides videos for each case of natural disasters to increase the understanding of the lecture and improve the concentration of the class by submitting assignments. Through this course, we consider the desirable attitude of mankind toward nature.

Introduction to geophysics is offered for sophomores in the division of geology and geophysics. This course aims to illustrate how different types of geophysical observations provide constraints on Earth’s gross structure and composition. The geophysical techniques include seismic refarction and reflection, earthquake seismology, gravity, magnetics, and heat flow.

인공위성 원격탐사에서 얻어지는 다양한 정보에 대하여 이해한다. 원격탐사의 에너지원인 전자기파의 물리적 성질을 이해하고 각종 인공위성 원격탐사 시스템과 응용분야에 대한 지식을 얻는다. 주당 강의 2시간, 컴퓨터 실습 2시간으로 진행된다. 수업은 PPT를 기본으로 하며 컴퓨터 실습은 원격탐사 전용 실습 프로그램에 대한 숙지 및 실제 위성자료를 이용한 처리를 공부한다. 이를 통해 인공위성 원격탐사에 대한 이해도를 높이고, 다양한 응용 분야에 대한 적용 사례에 대해 익힌다.

Students shall understand a variety of information obtained from satellite remote sensing. They shall understand the physical properties of electromagnetic waves, the energy sources of remote sensing, and gain knowledge of various satellite remote sensing systems and applications. The course will have two hours of instruction per week and two hours of computer training. Classes are based on PPT, and computer labs to study remote sensing training program and processing using actual satellite data. Students will have a better understanding of satellite remote sensing and will be able to learn application examples for various applications.

This course explores various physical phenomena occurring on Earth, such as earthquakes, landslides, and volcanic activity, through a data-driven approach. Students apply fundamental concepts of linear algebra and statistics to real geophysical datasets to develop the ability to identify patterns from data. Through hands-on programming exercises in Python, they learn techniques for data preprocessing, visualization, regression analysis, probabilistic modeling, and hypothesis testing, thereby strengthening their capacity to quantitatively interpret complex Earth system processes. In addition, students gain practical experience by acquiring field GNSS data and processing satellite-based geospatial datasets to investigate geohazard issues in the Gangwon region.

This course teaches the principles and theories of electromagnetism required to study geophysics. Students will learn basic vector operations and calculus. Next, we study the electrostatic field, magnetic field, and electromagnetic field that change with time, and derive the Maxwell equation. Student can acquire basic knowledge necessary to understand the behavior of electric and magnetic fields inside and outside the earth. Based on this, the principles of electric exploration, electromagnetic exploration and GPR exploration will be understood.

The objective is to recognize the impact of groundwater on the environment, to conserve groundwater, and to learn how to use groundwater safely from an environmental point of view. Students will learn terms related to groundwater quality and how to analyze and remediate groundwater quality. Students can explain groundwater quality and environmental terminology, and explain how groundwater pollution is remediated.

This course deals with introduction to igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. First of all, Characteristics, minerals, textures, structures, and petrogenesis of Igneous rocks are dealt with. Secondly, classification, texture, and petrogenesis of sedimentary are discussed. Finally, nature, classification, syructure, and petrogenesis of metamorphic rocks are treated.

This course aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge and field applications of geophysical exploration techniques, reflecting the industrial needs closely tied to the geology, natural resources, and subsurface environment of the region. Students will learn the principles and basic data interpretation methods of seismic, electrical, electromagnetic, gravity, and magnetic surveys, and develop the ability to apply these methods to local problem-solving. Through case studies, students will also strengthen their practical competencies in site investigation, subsurface resource evaluation, and ground stability assessment, which are essential skills demanded by major regional industries and public institutions.

이과목은 (1)암석에응력이가해질때발생하는암석의거동과파괴에대한이론적고찰 (2) 암석의물성및역학적특성에대한각종시험에대한이론적교육및실험, (3)지반의응력측정및변형성에대한이론적고찰 및 (4) 이론과실험에서얻어진결과의현장적용을 공부한다.1주에서6주까지는실험을하지않고강의로진행한다. 6주에서14주까지강의와실험을진행한다. 실험이완료되면각실험에대하여보고서를작성하여제출하여야한다. 지질공학의기초적인지식인암석역학에대한기본적인지식을취득하게된다.앞으로배우게될토질역학,암반공학의기초과목습득하게된다.

This course studies (1) the behavior and failure of rock when stress is applied, (2) theory and experiments for mechanical and physical properties of rock, (3) in-situ stress measurement and deformation of rock, and (4) field application of results obtained from theory and experiment. Only lecture will be given from 1 to 6 weeks. Lectures and experiments are conducted from 6 to 14 weeks. When students finish the experiments, they should submit a experimental report. Rock mechanics is the basic knowledge of geological engineering.

Paleomagnetism is a field that studies past geomagnetic fields recorded in geological materials (rocks, sediments, and soils) and archaeological relics. It is applied to various fields of Earth Sciences such as the origin and changes of the geomagnetic fields, Plate tectonics, Earth's interior dynamics, Magnetostratigraphy, Paleoenvironmental reconstruction, Age dating of archeological remains, and so on. In this class, students learn the basic principles of Paleomagnetism and how they are used in geophysics and geology.

Introduction to seismic exploration is offered for junior students in the division of geology and geophysics. Both conventional reflection and refraction methods will be covered in the lectures. In addition, surface-wave methods and tomographic analysis will be introduced.

This course introduces the principles of gravity and magnetic surveys and develops practical skills for subsurface exploration. Using the Gangwon region’s geological settings as a case study, students learn theory, data acquisition, and interpretation methods, and conduct fieldwork to analyze real survey data. Upon completion, students will interpret gravity and magnetic geophysical information and apply it in the field.

토질역학은흙의물리적성질을파악하고이들이흙의강도,압축성,안정성,투수성등에미치는관련성에대하여연구하는학문이다.토질역학에서배운내용은교량,댐,도로,항만,상하수도,건물등과같은각종구조물의설계나시공에응용되고있다.강의를실시하고,각장의연습문제를각장의강의가종료된다음주까지학생들이풀어서제출하면조교가수업시간에문제를풀어주는방식으로진행한다.시험은2번을실시하며성적은시험,출석과제물제출등을합산하여산출한다.토질역학은지질공학의기본과목이며,학생들이응용지질업체나토목회사에취직을할때필수적으로사용되는과목이고,또한응용지질기사시험의상당한부분을차지하는과목이다.

Soil mechanics is a course to study of the physical and mechanical properties of soil, such as strength, compressibility, and permeability. Knowledge acquired in soil mechanics course can be applied in engineering project, such as bridges, dams, roads, ports, groundwater and sewerage. this course will be given by lectures and students should submit homeworks which are answers of problems in the end of each chapter. There will be 2 examinations in a semester. Grades will be given based on exams, attendance, and homeworks. Soil mechanics is a basic subject in geological engineering. This course covers a significant portion of senior engineer qualification test for geological engineering.

지식정보사회에서 중요한 인프라로 인식되고있는 지리정보시스템(Geographic Information System)의 개념과 활용을 강의와 컴퓨터실습을 통해 익히고 지구과학적 응용을 탐색한다. 주2시간 강의를 통해 지리정보시스템의 개념을 이해하고 주2시간 컴퓨터실습을 통해 지리정보시스템의 실제를 체험한다. 이를 통해 다양한 분야에서 사용되는 GIS의 기초와 실무를 배우고 익혀 향후 연구 및 취업에 있어서 선택의 폭을 넓힌다.

Students will learn the concept and use of Geographic Information System, which is recognized as an important infrastructure in the knowledge and information society, through lectures and computer labs, and explore geoscience applications. Students will understand the concept of geographic information system through two-hour lectures and experience the reality of geographic information system through two-hour computer training. They will learn the basics and practice of GIS used in various fields, and expand their choice in future research and employment.

Students will learn the theory and application of image processing for geoscientific information extraction from satellite remote sensing. Students will understand the characteristics of satellite remote sensing data, its scientific visualization methods, and techniques for satellite information extraction. The course will have two hours of lectures per week and two hours of computer labs. Students will learn the theory of image processing and satellite information extraction in the lectures. In the labs, they will process and analyze satellite observation data using computers. Through this course, students will cultivate expertise required for monitoring global environmental changes, observing natural disasters, developing resource and national territory by acquiring the ability to process and analyze satellite remote sensing data.

This course will introduce physics of formation and interior mantle dynamics of terrestrial planets including Earth, Mars, and Venus. This course will introduce essential physics and mathematics to understand the geophysical features of the planets' interior (e.g., subduction, mantle convection, plume). Students can understand the relationship of geophysical phenomena between planet’s interior and surface.

지구물리학부에 입학한 3-4학년 학생을 대상으로 반사파자료 해석 방법을 소개하고 석유탐사에 응용되는 예를 살펴본다. 탄성파반사법를 이용하여 유가스자원 탐사자료 해석에 필요한 위한 기초 원리, 자료획득, 처리과정 등을 간단히 살피고, 물리검층 자료와의 대비, 구조 및 층서학적 해석, 물성해석 등에 필요한 이론 및 과정을 다룬다.

This course is offered for junior and senior students in the division of geology and geophysics. After basic principles, data acquisition, and processing of the seismic reflection method are covered, correlation to well data, both structural and stratigraphic interpretations, and prediction of physical properties using seismic data will be discussed. Students should be able to conduct professional tasks in oil and gas exploration through learning essential theory and acquiring practical skills.

The aim of this course is to enhance professionalism and strengthen field adaptability through field practice on various geophysical exploration methods. Students use each exploration technique to obtain data on-site, process and interpret it in the lab, and produce a final report. Students will have the skills needed by the geophysical industry.

This course delas with theory and practical problem of earth pressure which are the basic knowledge for the senior geological engineer qualification, investigation of joint, streographic projection, stability of rock slope and the classification of rocks mass. Lecture will be give by writing on the blackboard for the earth pressure part, but sreographic projection will be taught by projection practice on a tracing paper. This course is very helpful to get the senior geological engineering qualification and some very good companies.

Students will learn surveying as a fundamental component of geospatial information recognized as a core of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Through lectures on surveying theory and practical case studies, they will understand the spatial relationships among points on the Earth and their characteristics. In a three-hour weekly class, they will study the definition of surveying and major surveying methods, and develop problem-solving skills for processing and interpreting survey data. By the end of the course, students will have acquired the theoretical and applied knowledge required for geophysical research and entry into industry.
